    Finding Alternator Faults

    Finding Alternator Faults

Checking the alternator to make sure it is charging properly will save a lot problems in the future. The light on the dashboard known as the battery light will let you know if the battery is being charged or not.If your car is fitted with an alternator and not a dynamo, then this light should work for most cars, in exactly the same way.Once you turn the ignition key to the "ignition on" position, the ignition light should come on.Once the engine has started running the light should go out fully or at least as soon as you get above an idling speed. If the light does not come on at all before the idle speed or comes on after the idle speed, then there is a fault in the charging system. If the problem is the light does not come on at all and the wire is connected, the most likely cause is the bulb may have blown in the dashboard. The bulb is normally behind the instrument cluster so may not be that easy to get to.If the ignition light comes on after the idling speed, then there could be more than one problem. The first thing to establish is if the battery itself is suitable for charging, for example, if the battery is so dead that it cannot take the charge this could be the reason. The gravity of the electrodes in each cell will have to be checked with a battery hydrometer. This is particularly important for batteries that have been standing around for a long time. Then check the battery is connected properly with good connections and a smear of Vaseline to prevent any corrosion. If the battery is suitable for charging and connected properly, then check the tension of the drive belt to make sure it is not slipping. If that looks fine, then test the alternator is working by putting a multimeter across the battery whilst a friend revs the engine check to see if the volts raise from 12 volts to around 14volts.If the volts do not rise, you will have to investigate further. Most connections to the alternator are done via a multi-plug.Check first to make sure the plug has not come loose. If it has, push it back in and take the reading again. If the volts are still not rising, then remove the multi-plug and with the multimeter put the negative wire of the multimeter to the earth of the car and then test each connection of the multi-plug with the positive probe. If you see 12-14 volts on each connector, then the alternator will be deemed to be at fault.Normally at that stage an auto electrician should be able to tell you if it is just new brushes that are needed or a replacement alternator.

    Batteries - Maintenance & Testing

    Batteries - Maintenance & Testing

Battery Charging.A.Ensuring correct polarity, connect battery charger.B.The battery should be charged at normal bench charge rate.Battery is fully charged when the charging voltage and electrolyte level show no increase over a period of at least 2 hours.Minimum charging is 4 hours. The charge time must be extended on a pro-rata basis if the only available current is lower than that specified.C.Acid temperature must not exceed 50°C during charging. If necessary, interrupt or decrease charging current.D.Check that specific gravity on all cells is 1.280 (0.010 when fully charged).E.Now, replace the vent plug and check electrolyte levels in all cells two hours after charging.Using distilled water, adjust to 15 mm above the plates or to the "MAX" line, if necessary.Visual Checks.Look out for powder forming around the battery terminals or bases of batteries and for leaks. This can lead to corrosion.Look out for any damage or knocks to the batteries.Battery Maintenance.A.Battery tops and terminals must be kept clean.B.Use petroleum jelly or similar to coat terminals and connections sparingly.C.NEVER overtighten terminals, but keep them tight.D.Electrolyte should be 3 mm (1/8") to 6 mm (1/4") above the top of the plates.Check regularly.Use only distilled water or chemically pure water if topping up is required.E.Ensure the alternator/generator belt is tensioned to manufacturer's recommendations.Check it regularly. Also check regularly for signs of wear.Battery Testing.Always make a visual examination before testing batteries with instruments.1.Corroded terminals - a white powdery substance around post connections which may prevent battery charging.2.Check that all cells contain electrolyte.A dry cell indicates a cracked casing.3.Check for loose terminals and any other external damage.Hydrometer Testing Use a hydrometer to establish the specific gravity of the sulphuric acid in the battery, and as a result of the state of charge.Method.1.Do not add distilled water.2.Keep the barrel upright, draw up enough electrolyte from each cell in turn to allow the float to ride free.If necessary, tilt the battery to obtain sufficient electrolyte.Read off at eye level.1.270 to 1.280 S G Full Charge 1.220 to 1.230 S G Half Charge 1.150 to 1.220 S G Discharged. The readings from all cells should be within 0.030 points. If the variance is greater, then it is likely that the battery needs replacing. If all cells are consistently low, the battery may still be serviceable but we advise battery replacement as quickly as possible.Diesel Generator Batteries.Diesel generators are rarely thought of when mentioning power protection systems and batteries but a battery is a key component in any standby generator. The battery is required to start-up the generator as soon as the mains power fails and without it, the generator would be pointless.

Battery Reconditioning is Becoming Very Popular in the USA

Battery Reconditioning is Becoming Very Popular in the USA

It is surprising just how easy it is to recondition a battery, with a little trade knowledge.Nowadays, pretty much anyone can teach themselves battery reconditioning with the teaching of a well written and comprehensive guide. These are now only $50 to $60 on the internet. The concepts are reasonably elementary and the equipment needed costs well under $200 if taken seriously, even less for simple use around the home and on one's own vehicle.Normally after three or four reconditions, you could say you were quite proficient.Of course, there is also plenty of money to be made mending seemingly dead batteries. That is a trend which can only rise as more equipment becomes portable and vehicles rely more on electricity for motive power. As a battery matures and has been recharged numerous times, it loses its capacity which then needs to be corrected.Frequently this is only possible to a certain level or even not at all.Quick testing and fast rejuvenation are the keys.It is quite easy to make good money fixing batteries. It lends itself excellently to profitable part-time work which can be grown into an established business, if desired.Due to the very low investment required to start up, the real value comes from the expertise. That is not difficult with a recommended trade manual, normally available as an e-book.The demand for battery reconditioning will only grow as will the awareness that batteries can be brought back to life. The essential equipment needed for effective battery repair are a computer battery analyzer, a smart charger and a hydrometer for lead acid batteries. That's all.

    How to Refurbish Industrial Batteries

    How to Refurbish Industrial Batteries

Industrial batteries are made using thick plates so that they can offer prolonged usage time.Sometimes, their performance may be reduced and this calls for them to be refurbished.Industrial batteries are much bigger than SLI, marine and automotive batteries.Refurbishing industrial batteries allow them to restore their capacity to store charge for longer periods of time.Below are the steps that you should take to refurbish an underperforming industrial battery.A forklift is needed to lift the battery to a concrete wash.A forklift is used because these batteries are very heavy some of which weighing as much as 20,000 pounds. When in the concrete wash, record the voltage readings in order to calculate the amount of current that is flowing between its terminals. If the voltage reading is more than 20 volts, you should further discharge it till you get a value slightly below 20 volts. After discharging the battery, the next step is cleaning its terminals.Sprinkle the battery top and the terminals using baking soda and then wet using fresh water.Use a wire brush to scrub the top and terminals to remove all the corrosion that may be present.Use fresh running water to wash the top and the terminal to ensure that it is very clean. The next step aims at measuring the acidity of the battery acid.Remove all the caps from the battery top and use a hydrometer to measure this acidity from each of the cells.Battery water should have a 30% sulfuric acid and 70% water.Record the concentration from each cell and see how they deviate from the normal concentration. The deviation obtained from each cell should aid you in establishing the amount of water or acid that should be added to each cell to restore the required concentration.Adjust these concentrations while using the hydrometer to measure the concentration. When you are satisfied that the required concentration has been reached, connect the battery to the charger and allow it to be charged for about 8 hours. After 8 hours the battery should be fully charged.Use a voltmeter to measure the voltmeter reading and record it.If the battery does not attain the expected voltage, it may mean that there is something wrong with some cells in the battery.Use the hydrometer again to measure the acid concentration from each battery hole. You will observe that there will be some cells whose will have changed and therefore you need to readjust them by adding distilled water or sulfuric acid.Repeat this process until all the parameters are correct. If after all these adjustments you realize that there are still those cells that are unable to hold charge, then you should go ahead to replace these cells because they are destroyed. It is important to note that refurbishing an industrial battery should be done by a professional or somebody who have a great experience in handling this type of batteries. This is because industrial batteries hold a very high voltage which if not handled correctly could be very dangerous.
